Benefits of OER include:
OER provide free and equitable access of educational materials to educators, students, and citizens. It widens the scope of what is accessible while helping democratize education.
By sharing and adapting educational materials, content acquisition costs can be cut dramatically, allowing educational institutions to make better use of available resources. In educational contexts in which students are responsible for the costs of educational resources (e.g., textbooks), assigning OER results in significant cost savings and removes an important barrier to access.
Resources to address new standards
With the widespread adoption of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), conditions are ripe to explore the use of OER that may be adapted to align with these new standards. Some of the cost savings formerly associated with content acquisition may be redistributed to this work and associated professional learning.
Rapidly update content
OER quality improves over time by enabling continuous adaptation and updating of learning resources. This improvement cycle contrasts with traditional materials that typically have to be used by students for several years until a new edition is published or even the next purchasing cycle.
Adaptable for personalized learning
OER create powerful opportunities by enabling educators to use, develop, share, and adapt quality OER to meet their local context and their students’ unique needs.
As districts look to shift to a one-to-one computing environment, OER is a cost-effective way to provide digital content (Source).
